چکیده

ABSTRACT Expansion of (sub)millimetre capabilities to high angular resolution offered with interferometers allows resolve giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in nearby galaxies. This enables us place the Milky Way context other galaxies advance our understanding star formation own Galaxy. We, thus, remap 12CO (1–0) data along Perseus spiral arm outer a fixed physical and present first cube at common distance as it would be seen by an observer outside Way. To achieve this goal, we calibrated longitude–velocity structure gas based on trigonometric distances maser velocities provided BeSSeL survey. The were convolved same spatial whole regridded linear scale map coordinate system transformed reference frame. We determined width 7.8 ± 0.2 km s−1 around kinematic centre. study large-scale structure, derived mass surface density distribution velocities, shifted centre, length. yields variation length compression scale. thickness ∼63 pc average for centroid layer 8.7 pc.

Star formation in Perseus IV .

Context. In our SCUBA survey of Perseus, we find that the fraction of protostellar cores increases towards higher masses and the most massive cores are all protostellar. Aims. In this paper we consider the possible explanations of this apparent mass dependence in the evolutionary status of these cores. We investigate the implications for protostellar evolution and the mapping of the embedded co...

Star formation and structure formation in galaxy interactions and mergers

A number of theoretical and simulation results on star and structure formation in galaxy interactions and mergers is reviewed, and recent hydrodynamic simulations are presented. The role of gravity torques and ISM turbulence in galaxy interactions, in addition to the tidal field, is highlighted. Interactions can drive gas inflows towards the central kpc and trigger a central starburst, the inte...

Star formation in Perseus III . Outflows

Context. We present a search for outflows towards 51 submillimetre cores in the Perseus molecular cloud. Aims. Our first objective is to identify the protostellar population through the detection of molecular outflows. Our second aim is to consistently derive outflow properties from a large homogeneous dataset within one molecular cloud in order to investigate further the mass dependence and ti...

A New Spiral Arm of the Galaxy: the Far 3-kpc Arm

We report the detection in CO of the far-side counterpart of the well-known expanding 3-Kpc Arm in the central region of the Galaxy. In a CO longitude-velocity map at b = 0◦ the Far 3-Kpc Arm can be followed over at least 20◦ of Galactic longitude as a faint lane at positive velocities running parallel to the Near Arm. The Far Arm crosses l = 0◦ at +56 km s−1, quite symmetric with the −53 km s−...

The Effect of Spiral Arms on Star Formation in the Galaxy

We have examined the ratio between the integrated luminosity of massive young stellar objects detected by the Red MSX Source (RMS) survey and the mass of molecular clouds in the Galactic Ring Survey region, as a function of Galactocentric radius. The results indicate that 60–80% of the observed increases in the star-formation rate density associated with spiral-arm features are due to source cr...
